NEW DELHI- On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that they have been urging Gulf countries to think about a joint security mechanism for the region.
Lavrov addressed a security conference in Delhi saying that Russia has been suggesting that Gulf countries should think of collective security mechanisms including measures to build confidence and extending invitations to other Gulf nations for military exercises.
Gulf tensions have been on the rise since the killing of Iran’s Qassem Soleimani and Iran’s retaliation on Iraqi U.S. forces.
Javad Zarif, Iran’s Foreign Minister also attended the security conference in Delhi held a day after accusations on Iran from Britain, France and Germany of violation of the 2015 agreement for a nuclear programme curb.
Zarif was quoted saying that the using dispute mechanism was a strategic mistake as it was legally baseless.
