VIENNA (AUSTRIA) – An Austrian foreign ministry spokeswoman said on Saturday that Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg has tested positive for the coronavirus after attending a meeting with EU counterparts on Monday.
The infection of the minister raises fears that the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting was a super-spreader event. Belgian foreign minister Sophie Wilmes said on Friday she was going into self-isolation as she had suspected symptoms.
“It is suspected that Schallenberg might have been infected at the Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg on Monday,” the spokeswoman said, adding that there were no symptoms and he underwent a routine test.
He also took part in a cabinet meeting on Wednesday. However, all the participants wore masks, said the spokeswoman.
“As a precautionary measure all members of the government will be tested on Saturday,” she said.
