Sarina Wiegman firmly dismissed speculation about her potential departure to coach the United States following the World Cup. She reassured her commitment to honor her England contract until 2025, countering rumors that arose due to Vlatko Andonovski’s resignation as the US coach after their early exit. With her remarkable achievements, having secured victory in Euro 2022 and guiding England to the World Cup final against Spain, there were strong indications that US Soccer might seek her out.
The Football Association remains resolute in rejecting any rival team’s attempts to poach Wiegman before her contract concludes. Speaking from the team’s Terrigal base, Wiegman acknowledged the swirling speculation linking her to the US job, but she confirmed her intention to remain at her post at least until the next European Championship in Switzerland. “I have a contract until 2025,” she affirmed. “I’m genuinely enjoying my role, and I sense that people still appreciate my efforts. Departure isn’t on my agenda.”
Presently, Wiegman’s focus lies elsewhere — specifically, her fourth successive final in as many major tournaments. She previously secured victory in Euro 2017 with the Netherlands and led them to the World Cup final in 2019. She stressed that her present team holds a stronger position than her Dutch side from four years ago, when the USA outplayed them 2-0.
“Our growth throughout this tournament has been evident, and the players exude confidence,” she declared. “We’ve made a strong recovery and have a fully fit squad. We’re absolutely prepared.”
“Spain is the sole focus,”
Wiegman revealed that she now consumes every waking thought with the impending final against Spain. “Spain is the sole focus,” she stressed.”As we approach the next match, we are entirely focused on what lies ahead, the challenges we may face, and our preparations to ready the team. I don’t have relaxation on my agenda; my dedication is wholly towards preparing,” Wiegman emphasized.
“At this stage of the tournament, our journey has been profound, laden with challenges. Sarina Wiegman detailed that our current focus encompasses comprehending our opponent’s strategies. Facilitating recovery, and confirming everyone’s optimal condition — and we’re fortunate that all players are fit. She continued, “We’re gearing up with one more training session to go, meticulously analyzing Spain’s previous games, and considering potential new strategies they might adopt.”
From a tactical standpoint, England has already unveiled their approach prior to the final, embracing various styles and transitioning from a back four to a back three mid-tournament due to Keira Walsh’s injury. Her coaching staff conceived this strategic shift as early as April.
“We sought ways to confound our opponents,” Wiegman explained. “Initially, we stuck to our intended approach, given the squad’s abundance of wingers. However, after facing challenges and moments of vulnerability in the first two matches, Arjan [Veurink, her assistant] approached me and proposed shifting to a 3-5-2 formation. Recognizing the players available, we realized this structure would harness their strengths better. Thus, we made the change.”
Despite her consistent appearances in finals, Wiegman remains acutely aware of the rarity and significance of such opportunities. “Reaching a final is a truly extraordinary accomplishment,” she acknowledged. “Yet, upon reaching that stage, my focus immediately shifts to strategizing our remaining steps. At this moment, every aspect of my thoughts revolves around devising a plan to overcome Spain.”
