A residential building in the southern Russian city of Voronezh was hit by a drone. Resulting in injuries to two individuals, according to the local governor.
Instances of drone attacks have become increasingly common in Russian cities, including Moscow, as Ukraine claims to be preparing for a significant counteroffensive.
This marks the first such incident in Voronezh, a city with a population of approximately one million. Located deeper within Russia than Belgorod, which has previously experienced heavy shelling from Ukraine.
The governor of the region, Alexander Gusev, reported that a drone fell on Belinsky Street in Voronezh. Near the city’s central area and in close proximity to Voronezh State University.
Images showcased by Russian state media displayed a building with shattered windows and a blackened section of the wall. Indicating the impact of the drone strike.
Gusev informed that Russia’s FSB security service and emergency services were present at the scene, offering assistance to affected residents.
Throughout Moscow’s offensive in Ukraine, drone attacks on Russian cities have been prevalent. Recent months witnessing an escalation in their frequency.
The neighbouring Belgorod region, which shares a border with Voronezh, has experienced substantial shelling. Leading to the displacement of thousands of individuals residing in border towns.
Late in May, Moscow itself was targeted by an unprecedented drone attack.
Ukrainian authorities have consistently denied any involvement in the mentioned drone attacks.
In a video statement posted on the Ukrainian presidency’s website, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indirectly referred to the ongoing efforts of Ukrainian forces to repel the Russian invaders across different parts of the extensive front line. Spanning over 1,000 kilometres (approximately 620 miles).
Zelenskyy, speaking from inside a train car after visiting flood-affected regions in southern Ukraine, acknowledged his communication with Ukrainian forces operating in the active conflict areas and commended the undisclosed “result” achieved through their endeavours.
Ukrainian authorities have largely refrained from publicizing their recent military actions, opting not to engage in the growing discussions led by Western military experts and others, suggesting the initiation of a long-anticipated counteroffensive.
Zelenskyy reiterated the government’s position on Friday, stating that it was not yet appropriate to disclose specific details regarding the ongoing fighting.
