By adding the FA Cup to their collection of Premier League trophies, Manchester City has advanced towards what would be an unprecedented treble. Ilkay Gundogan scored both goals for the Sky Blues, one at the start of each half, as they defeated Manchester United 2-1 at Wembley.
Before many spectators had even taken their seats, the captain scored his first goal just 12 seconds into the match. That sent Manchester City on their way towards victory and they dominated the rest of the first half.
VAR awarded a penalty to Manchester United in the 32nd minute, providing them with a lifeline, as they harshly punished Jack Grealish for a handball at the edge of the area. Bruno Fernandes stepped up and converted to make it 1-1 at the break.
Gundogan – Manchester City’s hero
It wasn’t quite as early as his first-half goal, but Gundogan struck another volley at the beginning of the second half, in the 51st minute, to put his team back in front.
There were chances for Kevin de Bruyne and Erling Haaland, while Gundogan even had the ball in the back of the net again, although he was offside.
Despite United improving with the introduction of Alejandro Garnacho, they couldn’t find a way past the Manchester City defence and the Sky Blues held on to collect another piece of silverware.
Manchester City now have the Champions League final against Inter next Saturday, when they’ll aim to complete a treble.
The only English side to have ever won this treble in the past is Manchester United, but they couldn’t halt their city rivals at Wembley.
