The Dutch government announced on Friday that it will ban the sale of all types of nicotine pouches in the Netherlands .
In addition , The country will widen the rules for tobacco to include all other types of tobacco-free nicotine products.
The Netherlands government stated that the ban would make it easier to uphold the rules regarding nicotine pouches. which currently permit only those containing less than 0.035 grammes of nicotine.
The new rules will also prohibit using nicotine pouches . Also the use of other tobacco-free nicotine products . This is in places where smoking is not allowed.
The government also plans to end all advertising for tobacco-free nicotine products, a segment considered crucial for tobacco companies as they seek to transition away from health-damaging cigarettes and become smoke-free.
Health deputy minister Maarten van Ooijen stated that the tobacco industry keeps introducing new products that facilitate the exposure of young people to nicotine, which is addictive and harmful.
Therefore, he expressed satisfaction with treating these products similarly to tobacco products.
“This is bad, because nicotine is addictive and harmful. That’s why I’m glad we will now treat these products the same as tobacco products,” minister said.
Earlier, the Netherlands’ National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has examined the 23 approved flavourings used to create tobacco flavours in e-liquids and other smokeless tobacco and related goods, such as nicotine pouches. The government has already prohibited seven of the 23 flavourings.
