James Cleverly, the United Kingdom’s foreign secretary, embarked on a highly anticipated visit to China on Wednesday. This visit signals a crucial attempt by both countries to stabilize their bilateral relations, which have significantly deteriorated in recent years.
This diplomatic mission marks the first time a UK foreign secretary has visited China in over five years. Underscoring the strained relationship between the two nations. The deterioration in ties has been primarily attributed to China’s actions, including its crackdown on civil liberties in Hong Kong, a former British colony. And its treatment of Muslim minorities in the Xinjiang region. Additionally, China’s alignment with Russia and the UK’s close security partnership with the United States have further complicated the relationship.
James Cleverly commenced his visit to China with a meeting with Vice President Han Zheng. During the meeting, Vice President Han emphasized that the visit holds the potential to “further promote the sound and stable development of bilateral relations.”
Later in the day, Cleverly is scheduled to meet with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi. Wang Yi holds dual roles as the top official for foreign affairs in the ruling Communist Party and as the foreign minister. A position he resumed after the unexplained departure of his predecessor, Qin Gang.
Towards a Constructive Relationship
On the eve of Cleverly’s visit, Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, expressed Beijing’s hope that the UK side would collaborate in upholding mutual respect. Deepening exchanges, enhancing mutual understanding, and fostering the stable development of Sino-British relations.
During his visit, Cleverly has indicated his intention to raise contentious issues such as the situation in Xinjiang and developments in Hong Kong. He is also expected to stress the idea that Chinese global influence should be coupled with a sense of responsibility. Particularly in addressing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and managing geopolitical tensions in the South China Sea.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has advocated for a nuanced and non-confrontational approach in dealing with Beijing. While recognizing China as a growing “systemic challenge” to British values and interests. Sunak has also emphasized the importance of maintaining a working relationship with the Asian superpower.
