Rapper Quavo of the Migos trio has unveiled his highly anticipated second solo album titled “Rocket Power,” which includes a poignant tribute to his late bandmate Takeoff. The album features two tracks where the artists reunite, titled “Patty Cake” and “Back Where It Begins.” The latter of which also includes a collaboration with Future.
This album release comes after a devastating loss for the Migos group. As Takeoff was tragically shot and killed outside a private event at a Houston bowling alley in 2022. “Rocket Power” stands as Quavo’s full-length return to the music scene following this heart-wrenching incident.
Originally scheduled for release two weeks earlier, the album’s debut was postponed to allow for additional refinement. Quavo shared on Instagram that they wanted to “run some more tests before the rocket is ready to launch.”
The contents of the album were largely kept under wraps before its launch. In late May, Quavo teased “Rocket Power” on his Instagram, expressing that the album serves as a tribute to their dedicated fans. While also acting as a form of therapy for him. Quavo’s candid caption read, “This album is for the Rocket our true fans and also this is my therapy. This album is a true reflection of how I feel right now. Sometimes I’m Good, sometimes I’m Down, sometimes I’m Disappointed. Sometimes I fall apart but then I ALWAYS find my strength again.”
A Follow-Up With Weighted Emotion
“Rocket Power” serves as a follow-up to Quavo’s solo debut album, “Quavo Huncho,” released in 2018. The rapper’s return to solo work carries a significant emotional weight due to the loss of Takeoff.
In June, Quavo, alongside fellow Migos member Offset, made a notable appearance at the 2023 BET Awards, marking their first major public performance following Takeoff’s passing. During their performance of the hit song “Bad and Boujee,” Quavo and Offset paid tribute to Takeoff, shouting “BET, do it for Take,” while transitioning their backdrop imagery from a space shuttle to an image of Takeoff pointing skyward.
“Rocket Power” is a testament not only to Quavo’s artistic expression but also to the resilience and solidarity of the Migos group as they navigate their way through the loss of a cherished member and collaborator.
