Newly appointed military ruler of Niger, Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani, launched a scathing attack on neighbouring countries and the international community. Moreover urging the population to stand united and defend the nation. This address is one of the few the leader gave since seizing power in a coup. Toppling Niger’s democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum a week ago.
General Tchiani vehemently warned against foreign interference and military intervention in response to the coup. Calling on the people of Niger to unite and thwart any attempts to cause suffering to the hardworking populace or destabilize the country.
“We, therefore, call on the people of Niger as a whole and their unity to defeat all those who want to inflict unspeakable suffering on our hard-working populations and destabilize our country,” Tchiani declared.
Furthermore, he pledged to create the necessary conditions for a peaceful transition to elections following his removal of President Bazoum from power.
ECOWAS Sanctions: General Tchiani Criticizes Imposition
Amid the escalating regional tensions, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has threatened to employ military force if President Bazoum is not released from house arrest and reinstated by August 6th. In response to the coup, ECOWAS has imposed severe travel and economic sanctions.

Currently, France maintains 1,500 soldiers in Niger who conduct joint operations with the national military, and the United States and other European countries have contributed to training the country’s troops.
