The European Union (EU) has taken a significant step by officially launching an antitrust investigation against Microsoft. Its focus is on the company’s bundling of the Teams messaging and videoconferencing app with its Office productivity software suites. The EU’s competition enforcer, the European Commission, has prioritized this in-depth investigation. Concerns show that such bundling practices might provide Microsoft with an unfair advantage over its competitors in the market.
The investigation comes in response to a complaint filed by Slack Technologies. A renowned provider of workplace messaging software and a subsidiary of Salesforce. Slack’s allegation contends that Microsoft is leveraging its dominant position in the market. To eliminate competition and breach EU laws by unlawfully integrating Microsoft Teams with its Office productivity suite.
Margrethe Vestager, the EU’s antitrust commissioner, highlighted the essential role that remote communication and collaboration tools like Teams play in businesses across Europe. She emphasised the importance of preserving competitive markets for such products and ensuring fair competition.
“We must, therefore, ensure that the markets for these products remain competitive,” stated Vestager. “This is why we are investigating whether Microsoft’s tying of its productivity suites with Teams may be in breach of EU competition rules.”
The initiation of the investigation by the EU Commission does not determine the outcome of the inquiry itself. The process will undergo rigorous examination and scrutiny.
