A powerful typhoon, Doksuri, is inching closer to the northern Philippines, prompting authorities to conduct thousands of evacuations and suspend sea travel as torrential rains and tidal surges of up to 3 meters (nearly 10 feet) threaten the region.
As the storm barrels northwest off Cagayan and Batanes provinces, the country’s weather bureau warns that while the strongest winds at the typhoon’s centre are likely to remain offshore, outlying islands in the archipelago may be hit. The typhoon’s expansive 680-kilometre-wide (420-mile) rainband poses a serious risk of flash floods and landslides in the northern provinces.
Government forecasters report that Typhoon Doksuri was last tracked at a distance of 310 kilometres (193 miles) east of Tuguegarao city in Cagayan province, packing sustained winds of 185 kilometres per hour (115 miles per hour) with gusts reaching up to 230 kph (143 mph).
The impending typhoon is expected to exacerbate the seasonal monsoon rains in central and northern provinces. It follows a trajectory south of Taiwan, with a forecasted landfall in China later in the week.
