Carlos Alcaraz beats Matteo Berrettini

Carlos Alcaraz, the current top-ranked player in the world, achieved a hard-fought victory over Matteo Berrettini, a former Wimbledon finalist, in the fourth round of the tournament. The match, which took place on Centre Court, was an exciting encounter that saw Carlos Alcaraz recover from losing the first set to ultimately triumph over Matteo Berrettini in four sets. With scores of 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, Alcaraz secured his spot in the quarter-finals.

Alcaraz next opponent will be Holger Rune, who also claimed a four-set victory over Grigor Dimitrov. However, this upcoming match between Alcaraz and Rune will be the first Wimbledon quarter-final in the Open Era to feature two players under the age of 21.

Novak Djokovic progressed to the quarter-finals by defeating Hubert Hurkacz in four sets when they resumed their fourth-round match. Meanwhile, the surprise of the day came from Christopher Eubanks, as the unseeded American shocked Stefanos Tsitsipas in a five-set match.

Elena Rybakina

Defending champion Elena Rybakina will face Ons Jabeur in the women’s quarter-finals, in a rematch of last year’s final after the Tunisian beat Petra Kvitova in straight sets. Elsewhere, Mirra Andreeva’s run is over after her defeat by Madison Keys in the fourth round, with the 16-year-old Russian qualifier refusing to shake hands with the umpire after a controversial end to the contest.

Alcaraz expressed his joy after the win, stating, “I’m really, really happy to get through this amazing match. I’m really happy to be able to play my first quarter-final here in Wimbledon. Really excited about it. Let’s keep rolling.”

It is, perhaps, Alcaraz’s best career grass-court victory and a signifier of the progress he continues to make on the surface. Berrettini, a former Wimbledon finalist in 2021, has achieved four of his seven career ATP titles on grass, making him a rare player of this generation whose strengths are particularly emphasized on this surface. After losing the opening set, the top seed stepped up and thoroughly outplayed him.
