Actor Tom Holland has revealed that getting sober has been a life-changing experience, describing it as “the best thing I’ve ever done.”
The Spider-Man star recently discussed his path to sobriety in an interview on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast. Tom Holland shared how he realized he had become “enslaved” to alcohol.
Holland disclosed that his journey began after a particularly “boozy” Christmas last year. Deciding to participate in dry January, he quickly became aware of his strong cravings for alcohol, which deeply alarmed him. Recognizing that he may have an issue with alcohol. He extended his period of abstinence but found it challenging due to the prevalent drinking culture in England.
Tom Holland expressed his struggles with socializing without alcohol, stating that he felt restricted from going to pubs or enjoying dinners. It was during this time that he asked himself, “Why am I enslaved to this drink? Why am I so obsessed with the idea of having this drink?”
Motivated by these reflections, Holland set a goal to abstain from alcohol for six months. Remarkably, he achieved this milestone on his 27th birthday, June 1st, and described himself as “the happiest I’ve ever been in my life.”
Reflecting on the benefits of his sobriety, the star emphasized improved sleep, enhanced problem-solving abilities, and better mental clarity. He noted that challenges that previously would have unsettled him on set were now more manageable, allowing him to maintain a greater sense of calm and focus. Additionally, Holland highlighted feeling healthier and fitter as a positive outcome of his sobriety.
Courageously, Holland openly admitted, “I was definitely addicted to alcohol. I’m not shying away from that at all.”
The impact of his decision to get sober extended beyond his personal life. Holland shared that he distanced himself from the rugby community, which heavily revolves around alcohol consumption. Moreover, his journey inspired his mother to pursue sobriety as well, creating a positive ripple effect within his family.
