The Major League Soccer team revealed on Friday that free agent Sergio Busquets will join Inter Miami. The 34-year-old former midfielder for Barcelona and Spain, who decided not to extend his contract at the Camp Nou after an 18-year stint, will reunite with his friend and former teammate Lionel Messi.
By sharing a video on social media with praise for Sergio Busquets from players like Pep Guardiola, Xavi Hernandez, Luka Modric, and Messi, Inter Miami officially announced the news.
The former Barcelona captain, who retired from international duty last year, played more than 700 games for the Spanish champions, winning nine La Liga titles, seven Copa del Rey titles, three Champions League trophies and three Club World Cups.
Miami is reportedly seeking to sign a third former Barcelona player, left-back Jordi Alba, who is also departing the Spanish club at the end of the season. The team has confirmed that Lionel Messi is expected to make his Major League Soccer debut with Inter Miami in a home game on July 21.
Owner Jorge Mas told selected outlets on Monday that his club and Messi have agreed to terms and are finalising paperwork and a visa. The team confirmed certain details Tuesday to AP, including that Messi will be signing a contract through the end of the 2025 season with an option for 2026.
Messi’s contract will be worth $50 million to $60 million per year, the team said Tuesday. He cannot sign until sometime in July, after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires.
