Jennifer Lawrence made news during Cannes as she was photographed walking the Anatomy of a Fall red carpet in black flip-flops. She wore a billowing crimson Christian Dior couture gown. With her honey-blonde hair and statement diamond choker necklace, the addition of the simple flat flip-flop marked the ultimate high-low fashion moment.
The actress attended a screening of the documentary Bread and Roses and said she walked up the carpet in heels. But she came back to take photos with her production team at Excellent Cadaver. She said she would be uncomfortable in the shoes that were too big for her.
In a recent conversation with Entertainment Tonight, the Oscar winner said “I was not making a political statement, not that I wouldn’t. I had no idea until it like, came out that there was a whole controversy with people wearing flats, or like, walking down the red carpet barefoot. I had no clue. My shoes were a size too big.”
Cannes Film Festival Dress Code
The Cannes Film Festival has a strict dress code that requires women to wear heels on the red carpet. But while stars like Julia Roberts and Kristen Stewart have famously ditched their shoes in protest, Lawrence revealed to Entertainment Tonight that she was unaware of the controversy surrounding flats at the event. Jennifer Lawrence, however, was not trying to follow in any of their bare footsteps.
Jennifer Lawrence said. “I put on the flip-flops, and then everybody’s like, ‘What a statement! Wow,’” adding, “I’m all for making a statement. I just would want it to be on purpose.”
She added, “I had no idea until it like, came out that there was a whole controversy with people wearing flats, or like, walking down the red carpet barefoot. I had no clue. My shoes were a size too big.”
