On Tuesday, Jofra Archer, England, fast bowler, was ruled out of the next Ashes series against Australia. Due to chronic difficulties with his right elbow, which have reduced his playing time since 2021.
England announced that Archer would miss the full summer of international cricket due to a recurrence of a stress fracture in his elbow.
The 28-year-old Barbados-born bowler had two elbow procedures in 2021. He was forced to withdraw from this season’s Indian Premier League due to discomfort in the same location.
“It has been frustrating and upsetting for Jofra Archer,” said England managing director Robert Key. “He was making good progress until a recurrence of the elbow injury that had previously kept him out for an extended period.”
“We wish him all the best in his recovery.” I’m confident Jofra will return to his best and win games for England, regardless of the format. Hopefully, it will be sooner rather than later.”
The first of five tests in the Ashes series begins on June 16. England will begin the series with a one-off test against Ireland at Lord’s beginning June 1.
England named a 15-man squad for the Ireland encounter, including Jonny Bairstow. He will play for his country for the first time after injuring his left leg and ankle while playing golf.
Bairstow is back
Wicketkeeper Ben Foakes was dropped to make a place for Bairstow. He will bat as a wicketkeeper-batter and starred for England with some powerful middle-order performances last year.
“Leaving Ben Foakes out of the squad was a seriously difficult decision,” Key added. “He’s been fantastic for England in the last year. But Jonny Bairstow is one of the best players in the world. And his performances last summer exemplified everything we stand for.”
England has a strong stock of fast bowlers to pick from. Chris Woakes returning to the test squad for the first time since March 2022. Mark Wood returning following a hiatus from the New Zealand tour, and James Anderson overcoming a minor groyne injury. Other fast bowlers in the team include Stuart Broad, Ollie Robinson, and Matthew Potts.
And that’s without Archer, who stormed into the international spotlight in 2019 by helping England win the 50-over Cricket World Cup on home soil and then shining in his debut Ashes series.
There will be questions about whether he can ever play at that level again.
“He will now spend time with the England and Sussex medical teams. Who will work on his injury management,” according to the England and Wales Cricket Board.
Since Brendon McCullum was hired as coach and Ben Stokes was named captain last year. England has won 10 of its 12 test matches. Previously, England had won one of 17 test matches.
