Open AI the creator of ChatGPT said on Friday that the artificial intelligence chatbot is now available in Italy. The firm accepted the requests of authorities who temporarily barred it due to privacy concerns.
OpenAI stated that it met a slew of conditions that the Italian data protection authority required by an April 30 deadline to lift the restriction on AI software.
“ChatGPT is now available to our users in Italy,” stated San Francisco-based OpenAI in an email. “We are delighted to welcome them back, and we remain committed to safeguarding their privacy.”
ChatGPT, a generative AI system that uses enormous pools of internet data. Such as digital books, blog posts, and other media to generate text, images, and other content. That mimics human labour, has generated a lot of attention in the tech world and beyond.
Potential Societal Risks
However, their rapid development has sparked concerns among officials and even tech leaders about potential ethical and societal risks. With European Union negotiators scrambling to update draught artificial intelligence regulations that have been in the works for years.
Last month, the Italian watchdog, known as Garante, ordered OpenAI to temporarily cease processing personal information of Italian users. While it investigated a possible data breach. The authority stated that it does not want to stifle AI development. But stressed the need of adhering to the EU’s rigorous data protection standards.
According to OpenAI, it has “addressed or clarified the issues” noted by the watchdog.
The efforts include adding information to its website on how it gathers and uses data that trains the algorithms that enable ChatGPT. Offering EU users with a new form for objecting to their data being used for training, and introducing a tool to verify users’ ages when joining up.
Some Italian users shared screenshots of the changes, which appeared to include a menu button asking users to confirm their age and links to the updated privacy policy and training data help page.
