As the Met Gala 2023 anticipation is heating up, from the theme, and the guest list to skyrocketing ticket prices, here is what we know about the biggest fashion rampage so far.
When and Where
The Met Gala takes place on the first Monday in May. This year, the day falls on May 1, which happens to be May Day. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City will be hosting the MET Gala. The event is also known as the Costume Institute Benefit or the Met Ball. The red carpet will be available for attendees from 5.30 pm. It is anticipated that it will be open until 8 pm.
The Theme
This year’s exhibition theme is “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” and will examine the life” of the late Chanel creative director. The Met Gala announced the news at a press meet during Paris Fashion Week last September. Andrew Bolton, the Met’s curator, explained that it will not be a straightforward retrospective, but will pay tribute to his life’s work in a unique manner.
The Dress Code
According to Vogue, the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute fund-raiser event will pay homage to the designer through its dress code: “In honour of Karl”. Attendees on the night will therefore be basing their red-carpet looks on this theme. Vogue suggested that the most “authentic” way to approach the theme would be with an archival-inspired design from a Lagerfeld-led label.
The Hosts
Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine serves as Gala’s head host. There will be four hosts at the Met Gala – Dua Lipa, Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, and Roger Federer. The hosts have been drawn from music, television, movies, and sports, respectively, by Anna Wintour.
How Can You Watch It?
The live stream of the event will be hosted by the magazine and broadcast on its website. In addition, the gala will be broadcasted on their social media platforms. La La Anthony, Chloe Fineman, and Derek Blasberg will host the live stream. Gen Z influencer Emma Chamberlain will host the red carpet live stream, like last year.
The Guests
The extravagant fashion and star-studded guest list is a highly-guarded secret. Rumour has it past and present Chanel ambassadors such as Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie, Marion Cotillard, Kristen Stewart, Charlotte Casiraghi and Pharrell Williams may show up. Celebrities including Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Anok Yai, and Naomi Campbell are among those anticipated to attend the event.
Invites are sure to go out to stalwarts Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, Zendaya, Selena Gomez, Rihanna, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, the Hadid sisters, the Biebers, Zoë Kravitz, Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé. As of now, we have no official confirmation.
How To Attend?
If you are rich, famous, and influential enough, you may be invited to the “fashion Oscars”. According to media reports, ticket prices for the 2023 Met Gala have increased from $30,000 to $50,000.
“These people are already donating so much, to then ask for that amount is a lot,” says a source.
Plus, it is also rumoured that turning down an invite once means you are off their invite list forever.
Bonus Fact
Additionally, Karl Lagerfeld’s iconic cat, Choupette, will reportedly attend the Met Gala 2023. Choupette may indeed become the star of the red carpet at the annual gala.
