Biden admin unveils tough emission rules to speed electric auto shift.
Intending to speed the transition to electric vehicles by 2032. With a target of two-thirds of the new US automotive market.
The proposed rules provide aggressively low standards for greenhouse gas emission and criterion pollutants. Which are expected to lead to increased EV manufacture. And marketing in addition to the significant investments previously committed by US and overseas automakers.
Michael Regan, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), called the policy the “strongest ever federal pollution standards for cars and trucks.” Saying it will “accelerate the ongoing transition to a clean vehicles future.”
The proposal, which will now be up for public comment, is the latest in a series of moves taken by Biden. A Democrat, to assist put EVs on track for widespread adoption.
The rules do not explicitly require more EV production. But the strict emissions objectives are expected to expedite the switch as automakers turn to EVs as the only practical way to stay in compliance.
EPA to pull back auto pollution regulations
Previous US tailpipe regulations encouraged carmakers to use lighter-weight materials. Moreover, aerodynamically efficient designs to conserve energy. But they were the topic of considerable political discussion.
The EPA sought to pull back auto pollution regulations under Biden’s Republican predecessor, Donald Trump. Resulting in several lengthy battles that created uncertainty for manufacturers.
According to Cox Automotive, electric vehicles will account for 5.8 percent of the new vehicle market in the United States in 2022. Up from 3.2 percent in 2021.
However, Biden’s efforts, including $7.5 billion to fund a national EV charging network. And a slew of tax breaks in his flagship Inflation Reduction Act, have coincided with large EV investment announcements by General Motors, Ford, and others.
Nonetheless, achieving 67 percent penetration in less than a decade may appear implausible.
However, White House environmental advisor Ali Zaidi stated that professional projections of EV investment had been understated since Biden entered office in January 2021. He mentioned that GM plans to go all-electric by 2035.
