Local authorities reported on Monday that the death toll from Sunday’s avalanche in the French Alps had risen to six, including two mountain guides.
The prosecutor’s office in Bonneville, located in the Haute-Savoie region, announced that they had found the body of a sixth person in French alps after searches resumed on Monday morning.
The Haute-Savoie prefecture reported that search teams found eight individuals unharmed, and they sent one person who sustained minor injuries to the hospital.
The authorities have not provided any details regarding the identity of the victims.
The avalanche occurred on Sunday on the Armancette glacier in Contamines-Montjoie, located in the Haute-Savoie region, approximately 30 kilometers (almost 20 miles) southwest of Chamonix.
Despite the fact that the Alps are a popular vacation destination over France’s Easter long weekend, the local France-Bleu radio station estimated the size of the avalanche to be 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) long and 100 meters (328 feet) wide.
The national weather agency Meteo France had not issued a specific avalanche warning for Sunday, assessing the risk as “limited.”
