The Chief of Tamale, Nyab Dakpema conferred the title Queen Zosimli Naa on Kennedy S. Johnson, in the Kingdom of Dagbon at the Dakpema Palace with the blessings of the elders. Esteemed business owner, world traveler, and amazing mother, Kennedy S. Johnson is one of the most influential people from the Diaspora. Johnson is a prolific traveler and a champion for cultural exchange, constantly making a tremendous impact while uplifting the Global Black community.
She is most known for her travel agency, Green book Travel that organizes immersive ancestry and heritage tours for people interested in exploring Africa culture and traditions in Black and Indigenous communities in the Americas, Africa, and the Caribbean. Her agency drives tourism dollars into local economies, and she takes special interest in promoting business with Black entrepreneurs and artisans. The local impact of her trips are widely known. Being an explorer herself, Kennedy S. Johnson has also traveled to more than 55 countries worldwide.
Her efforts in Ghana caught the attention of the Dakpema leaders, who hope that her appointment will lead to further development of the region as well as increased cultural awareness between Ghana and the US. Johnson is the first African-American to hold this title, and she does not take it lightly. ‘Historically, Ghana has promoted unity, Pan-Africanism, and the development of the continent of Africa. As a member of the diaspora, the title of Dakpema Queen Mother in the Dagbon Kingdom is like a supreme blessing from the ancestors.
Johnson’s goals in business are exceeded only by her goals in philanthropy. Through her non-profit, Kith and Kin, she sponsored numerous projects across the African continent. These projects include a bore hole for the people of Pepraw in Nsawam, sanitary napkin drives for the Krobo Community, and the donation of shoes to 120 children in the Kasuliyili community in the Tolon district. She plans to use her new platform to do much more.
The title she has been given comes with great responsibility, respect and reverence. The Kingdom of Dagbon is one of the oldest and most organized traditional kingdoms in Ghana founded by the Dagomba people in the 11th century. Dagomba is the second largest ethnic group in Africa. Tamale Metropolitan Area is the capital city of the Northern Region of Ghana & fastest growing city in West. Tamale is Ghana’s third largest city with a projected population of 1 million people under her reign. In Ghana’s constituency, there is a state-controlled political system and a chieftaincy system. The constitution of Ghana recognizes and protects the power of the chiefs in local matters such as conflicts between people such as marriages, land disputes etc. Chiefs are responsible for maintaining Ghana’s cultural heritage and identity in the face of progress as well. They are hierarchical organized with the Paramount chiefs on the highest position. Chief titles are granted through Royal ancestral lineage. There are a few titles that don’t require ancestral lineage and few instances in which outsiders such as activists, researchers up to and including the great Winnie Mandela have been enstooled.
