DUBAI – Popular Pakistani musician and playback singer Javed Bashir provided a feast of music to his adoring fans at a concert at Expo’s Jubilee Stage. The repertoire covered qawwalis (Sufi Muslim poetry), Bollywood hits and some lilting Punjabi melodies.
Backed by a full group of musicians and supporting vocalists, Bashir, playing a harmonium, interacted with the audience in Urdu between songs. Beginning with a classical qawwali, he switched to the popular hit ‘Yeh Tune Kya kiya’, before getting into more modern and avant-garde music.
He demonstrated his mastery of the qawwali and Hindustani classical music throughout the concert, to the appreciation of a discerning audience.
Bashir’s voice is familiar to many from the Indian continent. As a playback singer, he has lent his voice to such Hindi movies as Cocktail, Kahaani, Rush, Bombay Talkies and Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara!
