WASHINGTON (US) – Former US President Donald Trump will be looking forward to come back to the political spotlight, through the means of an address to a major meeting of conservatives, said a source familiar with his plans said on Saturday.
Trump aims to speak to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Orlando, Florida, on February 28, the last day of their meeting, according to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
“He’ll be talking about the future of the Republican Party and the conservative movement. Also look for the 45th President to take on President (Joe) Biden’s disastrous amnesty and border policies,” the source said.
Trump was acquitted in an impeachment trial held in the Senate after he leaving office. The 57-43 vote failed to reach the two-thirds majority required for a conviction.
Trump has expressed resentment at the 17 Republicans in the House of Representatives and Senate who cast votes for his impeachment or conviction.
Losing out to Biden in both the White House and with regard to control of the Senate has left Republicans on verge as they meticulously plan how to retain control of Congress in 2022.
Trump and McConnell went different ways in the weeks after the November election, after Kentucky Republican had identified Biden as the winner in mid-December.
Trump called McConnell “a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack” this week and warned that if Republican senators stayed with him “they will not win again.”
A number of top Republicans who are considered potential candidates for the party’s 2024 presidential nomination are also likely to speak at CPAC, which will have Trump’s secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, and Kristi Noem, the governor of South Dakota.
Two prominent Republicans from the Trump administration not on the CPAC speaker list are former UN ambassador Nikki Haley and former Vice President Mike Pence.
Another source told that Trump had dismissed a request by Haley to meet with him recently after she expressed remarks about him in a Politico article.
