LOS ANGELES (US) – Reality star and businesswoman Kim Kardashian has filed for divorce from rapper Kanye West after seven years of marriage. This has brought to an end months of rumours that their relationship is strained.
According to representatives of Los Angeles Superior Court and Kardashian, the 40-year-old actor has filed the divorce papers.
Citing sources, celebrity website TMZ said the split was amicable and that Kardashian had petitioned the court for joint custody of their four children. Reasons for the divorce are not known.
“He knew it was coming, but that doesn’t make it any easier,” said a source in an interview with People. “This is a somber day for him.”
Kardashian shot to fame with the reality TV series “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” and married West, 43, in May 2014. They became one of the most discussed couple in Hollywood and were popularly known as “Kimye.”
Their unconventional relationship became strained last year when West, who suffers from bipolar disorder, ran for the presidency making erratic statements.
The star in July came out with a statement seeking compassion for her parter’s mental health struggles after he quickly deleted a tweet in which he said he had been trying for separation for months.
They grew further apart with the 21-time Grammy winner spending most of his time at his ranch in Wyoming while Kardashian was confined to their Calabasas mansion outside Los Angeles.
The duo is reported to be billionaires. West minted money through his music as well as his Yeezy fashion and sneaker line.
Kardashian, who is undergoing training to become a social justice lawyer, raked in the moolah through her TV series, as a social media influencer and by coming out with an attractive line of cosmetics and foundation garments.
According to TMZ, the duo had a prenuptial agreement and that discussions regarding a property settlement are in an advanced stage.
It was West’s first wedding and the third for Kardashian who was briefly married to basketball player Kris Humphries and music producer Damon Thomas.
The papers were filed a month before the premiere of the final season of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” on March 18.
