MELBOURNE (AUSTRALIA) – After suffering an injury Venus Williams refused to beat the retreat in the match against Italian Sara Errani on Wednesday. But she suffered a 6-1 6-0 defeat and had to leave.
Venus Williams, 40, who is a 7-times Grand Slam winner and twice finalist at the Australian Open, began the tourney with a taped left knee. She twisted her right ankle while tackling an approach shot trailing 1-5 in the opening set.
The American howled in pain before limping to her chair to seek medical help.
But amid wide applause from the spectators, she returned to court with heavy strapping on her ankle and extra taping on the knee.
As her movement was terribly hampered she could not win another game.
