NEW DELHI (INDIA) – Social media firm Twitter Inc said on Tuesday that the orders by the Indian government to remove accounts are inconsistent with local law, adding that it would not impose an outright ban on some accounts and would curb access within India.
The federal government had directed Twitter to remove more than 1,100 accounts and posts, which it says blames the administration for trying to wipe out farmers. The Narendra Modi-led government said some of the accounts are supported by arch-nemesis Pakistan or are manipulated by a separatist Sikh movement.
“These accounts continue to be available outside of India,” Twitter said. “Because we do not believe that the actions we have been directed to take are consistent with Indian law.”
