HONG KONG – Two days before a travel bubble with Singapore allowing a limited number of passengers to fly both ways without undergoing quarantine comes into effect, Hong Kong recorded a spurt in daily new coronavirus cases, marking 26 on Friday.
Unlike what was witnessed in other cities, the financial hub has been spared the sharp escalation in the number of daily infections.
Of the 26 confirmed cases, 21 were local transmissions and this has prompted Health Secretary Sophia Chan to say that the city has probably entered a fourth wave of infections.
According to health authorities, another 40 people are likely to test positive for the virus.
As per the air bubble agreement which kicks in on Sunday, people will be allowed to travel between both cities without undergoing quarantine. However, they must undergo a coronavirus test before departure and upon arrival.
Only flights of Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines have been given the nod to operate.
