SYDNEY (AUSTRALIA) – Victoria state in Australia, which is the nation’s coronavirus hotspot, marked one new infection on Thursday, a day after a four-month lockdown was lifted in its capital, Melbourne.
State Premier Daniel Andrews said of the three infections identified over the past 24 hours, two were old cases.
“This is another good day,” Andrews he said in a media briefing in Melbourne.
The state, which accounts for more than 90% of the virus-related fatalities in the country, did not record any deaths from the pandemic over the past 24 hours.
Melbourne, which has a population of five million people, lifted the strict lockdown on Wednesday after it successfully curbed the spread of the second wave of the pandemic. It allowed restaurants, cafes and shops to reopen.
The country’s most populous state of New South Wales said on Thursday that three locally-acquired infections were recorded over a span of 24 hours.
So far, the country has recorded just over 27,500 novel coronavirus infections, which is much lower than many developed countries.
