LOS ANGELES (US) – Rapper Kanye West came out with his first official campaign video on Monday in his bid to run for the presidency, placing his focus on religion and families.
With erratic statements on social media, West, 43, launched his campaign in July. He is on the official ballot in a handful of states. However, experts say he has no chance of winning.
The video released on Monday shows the musician and fashion designer seeking votes from supporters.
“By turning to faith, we will be the kind of nation, the kind of people, that God intends us to be,” he says in the video, which shows families at prayer and nature shots.
It is the first major bid by West, who was one of President Donald Trump’s biggest celebrity supporters, as a serious contender for the White House. However, he has done little campaigning under his self-styled Birthday Party as there is growing concern over his mental health.
Two years ago, the “Heartless” singer and winner of 21 Grammy awards disclosed he suffered from bipolar disorder.
According to some political analysts, West could woo some Black voters from the Joe Biden camp.
According to a filing with the Federal Election Commission, the singer has spent $5.8 million on his campaign. Most of it comes from a $6.7 million loan.
His kanye2020.country website features advertisements for hoodies, hats and t-shirts with a price range of $40 to $160.
The site also features a 10-point policy platform that has police reforms, revamping the justice system, reducing student debt and restructuring the education system.
