WASHINGTON (US) – President Donald Trump, who is undergoing quarantine in the White re-energise his campaign and make a big comeback with just four weeks left for the elections.
Advisers said the president is looking at various ways to get his message out to voters in the battleground states, which will decide the outcome of the vote.
They said they discussed the options of Trump making a national address as well as a speech to senior voters for Thursday. On Wednesday, all eyes will be on Vice President Mike Pence’s debate with Democratic vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris in Salt Lake City.
The president’s aides say he is raring to hit the campaign trail and wants to take on Joe Biden in a debate in Miami on October. 15. However, Biden announced on Tuesday he would not take part in the event if Trump is not free from the infection.
Chances of Trump getting a boost from a stimulus package aimed at empty American pockets fizzled out on Tuesday after he ended talks with Democrats and both sides are divided on how much money is to be given.
House Speaker and top Democrat in the Congress Nancy Pelosi, along with Biden, blamed the president for abandoning needy people. Republican Senator Susan Collins, who is facing a tough re-election attempt in her home state of Maine, said Trump’s move was a “huge mistake.”
“The president turned his back on you,” Biden tweeted.
In the wake of key industries slashing jobs and threatening the fragile recovery of the economy, the president on Tuesday urged Congress to quickly sanction $25 billion for passenger airlines, $135 billion for small businesses and $1,200 stimulus cheques for Americans. “I am ready to sign right now,” he said in a Twitter message.
His attempt to get Judge Amy Coney Barrett confirmed by the Republican-dominated Senate before the election is also doubtful as three members of the house have tested positive for coronavirus and will not be able to vote.
