BRUSSELS (BELGIUM) – Belgium is finally getting a new government on Wednesday. This has come 16 months after a parliamentary election. The Belgian king is expected to announce caretaker finance minister Alexander De Croo as the new prime minister.
After weeks of talks, seven parties have agreed to form a governing coalition to take the place of the caretaker administration of Sophie Wilmes. She was leading Belgium through six months of the COVID-19 crisis.
Belgian newspapers including daily Le Soir reported, citing anonymous sources that De Croo was set to lead the new government.
Paul Magnette, leader of the French-speaking Socialists, tweeted that he was on his way to the palace to form a government with other parties.
A caretaker administration was in charge of Belgium since the start of the COVID-19 crisis.
