BEIRUT (LEBANON) – The Lebanese army said on Friday that it has unearthed 1.3 tonnes of fireworks from Beirut port during a search. The port was devastated in a massive explosion last month and it was blamed on a large cache of chemicals stored in a poor condition.
In a statement, the army said as much as 1,320 kg of fireworks were found in 120 boxes in a warehouse during a search. They were later disposed of by army engineers.
The blast on Aug. 4 left 190 dead and it was blamed on 2,750 tonnes of highly explosive ammonium nitrate stored in poor condition for years.
The explosion destroyed warehouses and concrete grain silos.
Earlier on Sept. 3, the army said it had also found 4.35 tonnes of ammonium nitrate near the entrance to the port.
