LONDON (UK) – In a bid to avoid being extradited to the US, Julian Assange resumed his legal fight in a London court on Monday. He faces criminal charges in the US related to the activities of his website WikiLeaks.
In the US, Assange is accused of conspiring to hack government computers and flouting an espionage law connected to the release of confidential cables by his website in 2010-2011.
The 49-year-old, who was born in Australia, formally declined to be extradited.
Across the world, he is hailed as the champion of free speech. His critics blame him for publishing highly classified documents, endangering the lives of intelligence sources.
