WELLINGTON (NEW ZEALAND) – Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand said on Friday that the restrictions to curb the spread of coronavirus will remain in place until the middle of this month.
Auckland, which is the nation’s second-largest city and the epicentre of the virus outbreak, will remain on alert level 2.5, capping gatherings to not more than 10 people.
“The best economic response remains a strong health response. If we get it right we will ultimately shake off restrictions faster and lessen the risk of bouncing around,” Ardern said.
The rest of the country will be under alert level 2, which mandates people to observe social distancing and restrict gatherings to not more than 100 people. The regulations will be reviewed on Sept. 14.
On Friday, the country reported five new cases of which three were cases of community transmission and the other two imported cases.
