LONDON (UK) – Costa Coffee, which is a unit of Coca-Cola Co, announced on Thursday that it planned job cuts in Britain in a bid to tackle its crisis-hit stores in the country. It is estimated that 1,650 people could lose their jobs. It is the latest chain in the country to warn of layoffs.
The coffee chain has 1,600 stores in the UK and it employs 16,000 people. As part of the layoffs, the role of assistant store manager will be done away with.
Its business was hit after people started working from home because of the pandemic.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged Britons to return to their workplaces and offices in a bid to boost the economy.
“While trade is returning, helped by the Government’s VAT reduction, which Costa passed on to customers in full, and the recent “Eat Out To Help Out” Scheme, there remain high levels of uncertainty as to when trade will recover to pre-COVID levels,” Costa said.
