WASHINGTON (US) – MTV termed ‘Black Panther’ fame Chadwick Boseman, who passed away after battling cancer last week, a “true hero” at the Video Music Awards show on Sunday. The event was dedicated to the star who died at the age of 43, shocking fans around the world.
During the opening of the event which is dedicated to honouring the best in pop music, host Keke Palmer said Boseman was “an actor whose talent and passion is a true inspiration to all the fans he touched, and everyone he encountered.”
“We dedicate tonight’s show to a man whose spirit touched so many. He’s a true hero, not just on screen, but everything he did. He impacts lives forever,” Palmer said.
Boseman passed away on Friday and his death triggered an outpouring of tributes from personalities such as former US President Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey and “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler.
His family said he was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016, but had not publicly disclosed it.
During the awards ceremony, footage of Boseman accepting an MTV Movie Award in 2018 for essaying the role of the ruler of the fictional African kingdom of Wakanda in “Black Panther” was shown with the words “Rest in Power.”
The movie was a first of its kind to feature a predominantly Black cast.
