NEW YORK (US) – Sportswear brands Under Armour and Nike announced on Thursday that they are supporting the decision of professional athletes to boycott games following the police shooting of a Black man in Wisconsin.
Actor Dwayne Johnson and Under Armour postponed on Thursday the launch of a new sneaker collaboration, saying: “We support all of those in sport who are currently demanding societal change across the United States and the globe.”
In a statement, Nike said it “stands in support of NBA and WNBA players and athletes across the sports community in their response to the senseless shooting of Jacob Blake.”
The sportswear brands expressed solidarity with the players after NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks boycotted Game 5 of their playoff series on Wednesday.
That prompted the National Basketball Association to reschedule all three games on Wednesday and three more on Thursday. The boycott spread to the Women’s National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer.
According to the Washington Post, the NBA players agreed not to boycott the rest of the season.
