CAIRO (EGYPT) – Acting leader of the Muslim Brotherhood Mahmoud Ezzat was arrested in Cairo during a raid in his apartment, Egyptian authorities said on Friday.
This comes as a blow to the hardline Islamist movement which has been crushed following a crackdown after it was removed from power seven years ago.
He was a former deputy to Mohamed Badie and was viewed as a hardliner. After Badie was arrested in 2013, he became the de-facto leader.
The government said he was arrested from his hideout and he is accused of joining and leading a terrorist group and receiving illicit funds.
Authorities also seized encrypted communications device and Ezzat is suspected of orchestrating several assassinations and a bombing since 2013.
