WASHINGTON (US) – In her Republican convention speech on Tuesday, first lady Melania Trump sympathised with the victims of the coronavirus pandemic and called for racial understanding. It was mainly targeted at women voters who no longer support President Donald Trump.
On the second day of the convention, the warmth of the speech sharply contrasted with the vitriolic rhetoric targeting Democrat Joe Biden, who is running for presidency, and apocalyptic warnings about the dangers of Democrat administration.
Melania acknowledged the pain caused by the coronavirus pandemic, which was in contrast to most other speakers, especially Trump, who has been criticised by Democrats for lack of solace during the spread of the virus.
“I want to acknowledge the fact that since March, our lives have changed drastically,” Melania told a crowd in the White House Rose Garden, where her husband was in the front row. “My deepest sympathy goes out to everyone who has lost a loved one.”
“And my prayers are with those who are ill or suffering. I know many people are anxious and some feel helpless. I want you to know: You’re not alone.”
Opinion polls show that college-educated women do not support Trump because of his combative style and rhetoric. The speech of Melania and other women was a bid to woo the critical voting bloc.
In her speech, the first lady reflected on the racial protests that swept the country following the death of George Floyd in May.
“I urge people to come together in a civil manner so we can work and live up to our standard American ideals,” Melania said. “I also ask people to stop the violence and looting being done in the name of justice and never make assumptions based on the colour of a person’s skin.”
