UEFA cancels Champions League qualifier after player tests positive

PARIS (FRANCE) – UEFA, which is the governing body of European soccer, said on Saturday that Slovan Bratislava’s Champions League qualification tie against KI Klaksvik has been cancelled after one of the players of the Slovakian club tested positive for coronavirus.

Initially scheduled for August 19, the match was rescheduled to August 21 after a member of Bratislava tested positive, forcing the entire team to go into quarantine.

The team prepared a list of players who had tested negative and secured permission to play. But a player from the new list returned two positive results and the entire squad had to be quarantined, said UEFA in a statement.

“The rescheduled match could not be played and the matter will now be submitted to the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body, for a decision to be taken in accordance with Annex I,” UEFA said.
