SEATTLE (US) – Boeing Co said on Friday it is bringing out a hand-held equipment emitting ultraviolet light to neutralise bacteria and viruses. This comes as part of a series of methods to disinfect flight deck surfaces and controls.
Safety concerns raised by airline crew and passengers prompted airline companies to roll out new technologies to sanitise aircraft.
The equipment, which is shaped like a wand, eliminates the requirement for alcohol to disinfect surfaces, especially sensitive electronic equipment, said Rae Lutters, chief engineer for Boeing’s ecoDemonstrator programme.
Boeing said it would get a licence for the wand and hire third-party firms to commercially produce the equipment.
It has been working on the wand in collaboration with 13 different airlines.
Many airlines use electrostatic disinfectants, which destroy viruses on contact, as well as an anti-microbial spray that forms a coating for 30 days.
