SEOUL (SOUTH KOREA) – Health officials in South Korea warned on Friday that a cluster of coronavirus cases in Seoul was threatening to spread to other places after thousands took part in a protest rally last week.
Most of the cases have been traced to the congregation of a Church which took part in the protest rally. But authorities said more people should voluntarily get tested to stem the spread of the virus.
As of Thursday midnight there were 324 new cases said the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This brings the country’s tally to 16,670 and the total number of deaths is 309.
“This is a very serious situation,” Vice Health Minister Kim Gang-lip said.
He said the government is trying to find out the names of all who took part in the rally and the details of the drivers who drove them from various provinces.
Kim said that health authorities have obtained the cellphone location data of 12,000 people in the area of protest and are trying to convince the Church to hand over the list of its adherents.
