MINSK/BRUSSELS (BELARUS/BELGIUM) – Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko gave police the green signal to crack down on protesters on Wednesday.
This comes as EU leaders held an emergency meeting to discuss the political developments in Belarus, which is a staunch ally of Russia and has heavily guarded borders with Poland and Lithuania.
EU leaders are expected to impose sanctions on Belarus officials responsible for alleged election rigging.
“There should no longer be any disorder in Minsk of any kind,” Belta news agency quoted Lukashenko as saying. “People are tired. People demand peace and quiet.”
