WASHINGTON (US) – The Democratic camp formally nominated Joe Biden as their presidential candidate on Tuesday, pledging to repair the country which has been pummelled by the pandemic and put an end to the chaos caused by President Donald Trump’s administration.
The Democrat four-day national convention, which has “Leadership Matters” as its theme, saw the virtual participation of former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter apart from upcoming Democrat and Republican stars.
From the Delaware high school where she once taught, Biden’s wife, Jill, delivered the headline speech in which she said how their love helped heal his scars caused by the death of his first wife and infant daughter in a car accident.
“I never imagined at the age of 26 I would be asking myself, ‘How do you make a broken family whole?'” she said, adding that the answer was the same for a broken country. “With love and understanding.”
“If we entrust this nation to Joe, he will do for your family what he did for ours: bring us together and make us whole,” she said.
Participants flayed Trump’s mishandling of the pandemic outbreak.
“At a time like this, the Oval Office should be a command centre,” Clinton said. “Instead, it’s a storm centre. There’s only chaos. Just one thing never changes – his determination to deny responsibility and shift the blame.”
