HONG KONG – Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said on Tuesday that she was not bothered by the US sanctions against her, adding that the city will lodge a complaint to the World Trade Organization (WTO) about a new US regulation regarding products made in the financial hub.
Washington imposed sanctions on Lam and other former and current Hong Kong officials for curbing political freedom in the city.
“Despite some inconvenience in my personal affairs, it is nothing I would take to heart,” Lam said.
“We will continue to do what is right for the country and for Hong Kong.”
The sanctions freeze US assets of the officials and prevent Americans from doing business with them.
The leader said that although she is not allowed to travel to the US, she would promote Hong Kong among American businesses.
Goods manufactured in the former British colony meant to be exported to the US have to be labelled ‘made in China’ after Sept. 25.
