WASHINGTON (US) – Former first lady Michelle Obama launched a scathing attack on President Donald Trump on Monday while urging Americans to cast their vote for Democrat Joe Biden to stop the chaos of the four-year-long Trump rule.
At the Democratic National Convention, Obama said Trump “has had enough time to prove that he can do the job” but failed to do so when the country is reeling from the pandemic, economic crisis and protests against racial prejudice.
“Whenever we look to this White House for some leadership or consolation or any semblance of steadiness, what we get instead is chaos, division, and a total and utter lack of empathy,” she said, adding that Trump was “the wrong president” for the country.
“He simply cannot be who we need him to be for us. It is what it is,” Obama said. “If you think things cannot possibly get worse, trust me, they can; and they will if we don’t make a change in this election. If we have any hope of ending this chaos, we have got to vote for Joe Biden like our lives depend on it.”
A long line of speakers came online for the four-day convention.
Democrats expressed concern about the safety aspects of in-person voting and they have been demanding mail-in ballots as a safer alternative. However, Trump has said that it is prone to fraud and has blocked emergency aid to the Postal Service.
Obama said those who had no hopes of winning a fair election were trying to stop voters by closing polling stations in places where minority communities reside, purging voter lists and spreading canards about safety of mail-in ballots.
“We have to vote for Joe Biden in numbers that cannot be ignored,” she said. “We have got to grab our comfortable shoes, put on our masks, pack a brown bag dinner and maybe breakfast too, because we’ve got to be willing to stand in line all night if we have to.”
