AMSTERDAM (NETHERLANDS) – Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman said on Tuesday that he is undertaking talks to quit his role and join Barcelona to succeed coach Quique Setien.
He coached the Dutch side since 2018 and led them to qualify for next year’s European Championship. He said he wanted to coach Barca though a deal has not been struck.
“It is only definite when my signature is on the document. Until then I cannot say anything, even if I wanted to,” Koeman said.
Setien was sacked on Monday just after seven months in charge. This comes after the club’s 8-2 trouncing by Bayern Munich in the Champions League last week.
Koeman is much appreciated in Barca for his playing career in Johan Cruyff’s ‘Dream Team’. He scored the goal that delivered the club’s first ever European Cup in 1992.
He then went on to become the assistant coach before being promoted as head coach, managing Dutch sides Ajax Amsterdam, PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord apart from Premier League sides Southampton and Everton and La Liga’s Valencia.
