TOKYO (JAPAN) – Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited a hospital on Monday for a medical check-up, said a source. This comes as a key official expressed concern over the leader suffering from fatigue due to overwork during the pandemic crisis.
The country’s longest-serving prime minister is expected to return home later in the day after undergoing tests at Tokyo’s Keio University Hospital, according to the source.
Though the exact reason for the medical tests is not clear, Kyodo News said it was a regular check-up.
Kyodo said the prime minister undergoes medical examination twice a year and the most recent one was on June 13. The visit on Monday was a follow-up.
Akira Amari, chairman of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s tax panel, had said that Abe, 65, could be suffering from fatigue because of his strenuous work to combat the spread of the virus.
“I want him to take a break,” Amari told Fuji TV on Sunday. “He has a strong sense of responsibility and feels it’s wrong to take a break.”
