22 new coronavirus infections in China, zero cases in Xinjiang

SHANGHAI (CHINA) – No new coronavirus cases were reported in China’s western region of Xinjiang on Aug. 16. For the first time since mid-July, the count has touched zero.

This has come as a relief to health workers as Xinjiang was a hotbed for the virus.

On Monday, the country marked 22 new coronavirus cases in the mainland compared to 19 a day earlier, according to the health authorities.

In a statement, the National Health Commission said all new cases were imported ones.

There were also 37 new asymptomatic patients, compared with 16 a day earlier.

There were as many as 84,849 confirmed coronavirus cases in the mainland as of August 16.

The fatality tally remains at 4,634.
