WARSAW (POLAND) – US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo held discussions with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in Warsaw on Saturday about a new defence pact and their support for the citizens of Belarus.
The other topics that came up for discussion included the COVID-19 pandemic, 5G networks and a new bilateral agreement to cooperate in the development of the country’s civil nuclear power programme, said a State Department spokeswoman.
As per the defence agreement agreed last month, the number of US troops in Poland will rise to 5,500, costing the country 500 million zlotys ($134.79 million) more each year.
As per the agreement, the expertise for Polish troops in reconnaissance and command will also be honed and more US troops could come in if there is a threat.
His visit to Warsaw comes after halts in the Czech Republic, Austria and Slovenia to enhance cyber and energy security ties with those countries.
Pompeo also held discussions on the situation in Belarus.
